White Lies and .... White Wine
Over 100 volunteers, donors and sponsors from Thomas's Battersea organised a week of fundraising activities culminating in a Call My Bluff wine-tasting hosted by Bonham's Charlie Thomas.
The School's Great Hall was transformed into a glittery 1970's game-show set where guests enjoyed a
tapas-style dinner kindly sponsored by the Frering family and fantastic wine kindly sponsored by Frits Vogels.
The panellists of judges, including Master Of Wine, Charles Taylor, Head of Middle School, Claire Oswald, and Headmaster Ben Thomas attempted to deceive guests - and each other - into believing a fictional and amusing story behind each wine being tasted. It was then down to the guests to decide who was calling their bluff. As guests travelled around the world sampling wines ranging from France to Chile, there was ever increasing noise and hilarity as even taller tales were told. This evening culminated in a dramatic ending as pyrotechnics were set off as the winning table was announced.
A highlight of the evening was the Auction where generous Battersea parents and businesses had donated a tremendous assortment of prizes including holidays, experiences, dinners and other treats - including a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Nepal. Charlie Thomas did a sterling job of encouraging the Thomas's competitive spirit to come alive and to ensure that the generosity continued into the bidding.
For those unable to attend the sold-out event, a Giving Tree was erected in the Tunnel allowing pupils and parents the opportunity to make specific donations to purchase much-needed items to enable children in rural Nepal to gain an education. The items ranged from pencils, to musical instruments to goats - and even two entire schools.
Battersea's Wine Tasting event will make a significant difference to the children in rural Nepal. Thank you to all those involved in making it such a great evening, especially Amy Robson, Suzanne Mackey and Jacqueline Scott.
