Small Nepalese boy standing outside his new school

I am 9 years old and I live in a village in Western Nepal called Midim Bhache, which is a whole days walk to the nearest town! My village is high up in the steep foothills, in the gigantic Himalayan Mountains. Click here to see if you can find my village on the map of Nepal.

I live with my mum and dad, my two little brothers and my sister. Our house has two rooms. I share a room with my brothers and my dad, while my mum and sister sleep in our main room. My family has a small field where we grow our vegetables.

What's New

Up until last year I spent all my time in the fields helping my dad with the daily chores. The nearest school was two hours walk away, and not many of the children in my village could walk that far, so we did not go to school!

Then last year, The CAIRN Trust built a new school in our village. The whole village was so excited about having a school and everyone worked hard to build it together. It was a real team effort. My father and my uncle helped to build the roof! I will be the first in my family to be able to read and write! When I grow up I want to become a teacher in my village.

My Country

In school, we have been studying about my great country of Nepal. Did you know that we have the world’s highest mountain? You may know it as Mount Everest, but in Nepal, we call it Sagarmatha (the goddess of the sky). Mount Everest is 8,870 meters high! That is the same as 60 London Eye's or 1,800 double decker buses stacked on top of each other!

We also have some really amazing animals in Nepal. In the Terai, which is an area of marshy grasslands and forests, there are tigers, leopards, elephants, buffalo, wild ox, and the great one-horned rhinoceros.
