Nepal Day
All the children and staff at Thomas’s Kensington had great fun during their Nepal Day on Friday 13th February.
In preparation for the day teachers had researched and then designed a range of activities that incorporated Nepal into all areas of the curriculum. The end result was a timetable which was not only varied, enormous fun but educational all at the same time. During the day, there were lots of creative activities, with children making garlands (mala’s), prayer flags and traditional Nepalese hats (Dhaka topi).
Using Nepalese instruments such as mandals (drums) and basurai’s (flutes) and CD’s, there were dance, drama and music workshops to get the children in the Asian mood.
CAIRN Trustees, David and Joanna Thomas, offered their support during the day, dressing children in traditional clothes and teaching them Nepalese phrases.
The Year 6 children had previously prepared PowerPoint presentations on Nepal which they presented to an eager and excited Year 2 audience. In PE, there was great excitement as the children took part in the Kabbadi tournament, played at the courts.
Some of the children also wrote letters in reply to the pupils at their adopted school in Bhujung. These communication pathways are something that the children in both countries are really keen to develop over time.
For the Reception children, there was face painting but the highlight was covering their teachers in coloured paints for the festival of Holi!
We were delighted to be joined by our special guests, Mr. Jhabindra P.Aryal, Charge d’affaires and Sunil Adhikari , Office Secretary from the Nepalese Embassy. The gentleman were put through a gruelling hour of question time by the year 6 pupils who fired questions at them on cultural and political issues relating to Nepal and the Gurkas.
Our guests also confirmed that the Nepalese lunch prepared by Miss Shiv, was as authentic as it was delicious, especially the rice pudding!
Everyone had their favourite activity on Nepal Day and it was a great sight to see the children leaving school waving their Nepali flags.
Thomas’s Kensington managed to raise an amazing £680.15 during the day, which will go towards supporting their adopted school in Bhujung.
